Knox Hardwood samples of local wood

At Knox Hardwood Flooring, we offer a wide variety of quality Northern hardwoods such as Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, American Cherry, Hickory, Ash, Locust, American Walnut, and Heart Pine. We also offer Exotic hardwoods such as Brazilian Cherry, Rosewood, Bamboo, Mahogany, Australian Cypress and more. All of our hardwood flooring is Unfinished ¾” thick and available in widths ranging from 2-¼” wide up to 7″ wide, except Pine which is available in widths ranging from 3-1/8″ wide up to 12″ wide. Most hardwoods are available in three grades: Select & Better (less than 5% mineral streaks & knots, more even-toned – a formal look); #1 Common (more mineral streaks & knots with a lot of color variation – an informal / rustic look); #2 Common (lots of mineral streaks, knots & holes with a considerable amount of color variation – an extremely rustic look).

In addition to the different Species of woods, hardwood flooring also comes in different “Grades” of wood. Below is an example of various grades of Red Oak.

Examples of different grades for wood.

The most commonly installed hardwood floor is Red Oak. Red Oak is very versatile, easier to maintain because of its grain, and takes stain more evenly than other hardwood floors. Also, Red Oak is the most readily available hardwood flooring and it is used to make trim packages and stair parts. Other woods are available for trim and stairs, but they must be special ordered thereby increasing the cost of the package and adding additional time for delivery.

One way of accenting your new hardwood floor is through the use of “Medallions” such as the one illustrated here. Medallions are available in a wide range of materials that will compliment your new floor. If you would like to see other examples of medallions that can be installed in your hardwood floor click here.

BUYER BEWARE OF THE EXOTIC HARDWOODS:

Exotic hardwoods, while very beautiful, can also be a heartache if you, the buyer, do not understand what you are purchasing. The most important thing to know is the origin of the lumber and its adaptability to other areas. Most of the lumber and the exotic hardwoods themselves are imported into the United States from countries such as Brazil, China, Taiwan, South Africa, etc. where the climate is more consistent year round. Do you get where I’m going with this? No – well let’s see if I can make it a little clearer. Exotic hardwoods thrive in hot, humid climates because of their origin; however, in areas such as Tennessee where the temperature changes four times a year (winter, spring, summer, and fall), exotic hardwoods are risky in that sometimes they are unable to adapt to the temperature changes, especially the cold weather. If you are interested in an exotic hardwood, you might consider using these types of hardwoods as a border or as part of a pattern or medallion instead.

The final decision is yours to make; howerver, you should choose your hardwood flooring carefully and be sure that you fully understand what you are purchasing and what you can expect so that you will not be disappointed with your decision now or in the future.
