Floor Care

Now that you have beautiful hardwood floors, here are a few tips.

Prior to moving any furniture in on your new hardwood floors, go ahead and put protectors on the bottom of the furniture. Do not roll any heavy furniture or slide any furniture or boxes across the hardwood floors as this can damage the finish as well as the hardwood.

Sealed or not, you should never mop a hardwood floor with WATER. As anyone who has ever had a water leak that damaged their hardwood floors will tell you, water and wood do not mix. Back in the old days when hardwood floors were waxed (polyurethane had not been invented), water and vinegar were used to strip the wax so that the new wax could be applied. Now that we have this wonderful product called “polyurethane”, the rules have changed. Unfortunately, some flooring companies have not changed with the times. Water and vinegar will strip a polyurethane finish just like it used to strip wax. The more often you use it, the faster your polyurethane finish will disappear. You should also avoid using any soap products or any products containing water or that require mixing with water. Also, no offense to the makers of those “wet jets”, but come on guys. Common sense tells us that vinyl, tile and hardwood (solid, laminated or engineered) are all different types of flooring, each requiring a different method of cleaning. One cleaner cannot be good for all of these and the cleaning solutions contain too much “WATER”. Lastly, you should avoid using the floor steam cleaners on your hardwood.  Water followed by steam (heat) does not bode well for a hardwood floor.  So, how do you maintain a hardwood floor?
